Welcome back and thank you to those who have taken the time to read the blog and visit the restaurant.
May I ask who is or was your role model in your line of work? When I was in my 20’s it was Martha Stewart, oh yea…. It was Martha on everything. I read every book, subscribed to the magazines, and did as much research on her as time allowed. When I was a student at Oregon State University and did catering on the side I even posed for a marketing shot just like she would. Ha ha…what a nerd I was. I liked her risk taking, her tenaciousness and her ability to bring true hospitality to others through great food, wonderful service and spectacular atmosphere. She was such an icon and a woman who I admired. Well, you kinda of know where things went with her in 2004. Believe me, I am about forgiveness, but how she treated people and her dishonesty were just a bit too much for me…so onward to seek a new role model… I found it in Danny Meyer, I have never met him, (yet), but love his books, his philosophy on our industry and the magnificent way he has created his empire. He has inspired me to work harder in building a business that develops leaders and happy employees.
Which leads me to another one of our outstanding team members. Matt Charles. Matt was born and raised here in Michigantown, IN… are you kidding me. He is from Michigantown WOW! what a blessing for Joe and me. I remember our interview. Matt challenged me during our chat and asked so many great questions about what kind of place we were going to have and what kind of people we were, his questions were thoughtful, and I knew he would be a great addition to our team. Thankfully, Joe saw the same thing. Matt grew up just a few miles from the restaurant on his family farm, his parents moved him to Coral Springs, Florida in 1985 where he started working at a deli while in high school. This led to a management position where he was exposed to all facets of the industry. He moved to Knoxville, TN in 1996 and spent almost 10 years learning more about his craft. From regional kitchen manager for a local chain, and then banquet chef for the Hyatt Regency in Knoxville where he got his culinary on the job training. All that experience with Hyatt led to a Chef’s position with the Gettysview Country Club and White Stone Country Club. He truly immersed himself and grew in his knowledge and love for hospitality. Similar to myself, Matt realized after being gone from his hometown that being back on the farm is truly where he wanted to be, so in 2014 he moved back to Michigantown and is the project manager for his family farm. Matt adds professionalism, kindness and caring to our kitchen. He has so much to offer and we are blessed to have him on our team. In his spare time he enjoys DIY projects, gardening, fishing and hunting. So what is keeping you from meeting Matt, see you at the restaurant soon!
